I love reading about the Bermuda Triangle, but the reality is that it has been a heavy-traffic area for more than 500 years. Hundreds of aircraft and watercraft travel within its boundaries every day. From a statistical view, using ton-miles, human-miles, total voyages, or voyale-miles, the losses are not excessive, especially considering the unpredictable and violent weather and sea conditions it is possible to encounter in that area, or any other large body of water for that matter. Ships grossing 300,000 tons regularly come to grief from rogue waves, freak waves, freak seas, adverse weather, accidents, breakdowns, human error and deliberate acts. Often they have sunk instantly, no distress call, no oil slick (even from the oil tankers), no debris at all. Most of these disappearances are from one or more of these causes, rather than anything exotic. Collisions could easily explain some of the more recent losses of smaller watercraft. Large tankers and container ships have very poor ability to detect smaller craft either visually or on radar, much like a car driver has a very poor ability to see a nail on the road. Such collisions have been well-documented, though the actual number is unknown. Many crews of large ships (100,000 gross tons or more) have pulled into port only to realize they had hit something at some point on their journey. It’s a neat thought that something supernatural may be happening in the Bermuda Triangle, but it’s probable only because of the sheer number of events that have happened.
