The U.S. military says Project Freedom has produced its first concrete result: two American-flagged merchant ships have now crossed the Strait of Hormuz while U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers moved into the Gulf to support the effort.

That matters because just hours earlier, the strongest signal from the waterway was paralysis. Monday’s earlier reporting showed almost no commercial pickup despite Washington’s promise to help stranded ships leave the Gulf. Now the story has shifted from a plan on paper to the first verified U.S.-backed transits — and to a sharper risk of direct confrontation with Iran.

According to Reuters, U.S. Central Command said the two merchant vessels transited the strait as American destroyers operated in the Gulf and were “actively assisting efforts to restore transit for commercial shipping.” Reuters also reported that Iran said it had forced a U.S. warship to turn back from the Strait of Hormuz. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran fired a warning shot, though CENTCOM denied Iranian claims that any U.S. warship had been hit.

The Associated Press separately reported that the two American-flagged ships had successfully crossed and that the U.S.-led Joint Maritime Information Center advised vessels to use Omani waters inside an “enhanced security area.” AP noted that U.S. officials did not say exactly when the destroyers arrived or when the two merchant ships made their passage.

That uncertainty is a big part of the problem. The Guardian reported that shipping executives remained cautious even after Washington launched the operation, with insurers and shipowners still unsure whether the route is safe enough to resume normal traffic. Iran has warned that vessels moving through Hormuz must coordinate with its armed forces, while the U.S. is trying to reopen traffic without conceding that control.

In plain English: this is the first real evidence that Washington can move at least some commercial shipping through Hormuz again. But it is not a return to normal, and it may be the most dangerous phase yet. The same update that brought news of the first crossings also brought competing military claims, a spike in oil-price anxiety, and a reminder that one misread maneuver could turn a shipping operation into a direct U.S.-Iran clash.

For now, Project Freedom looks less like a clean reopening and more like a high-risk proof of concept.
