What is Mike Tyson’s net worth? Born as Michael Gerard Tyson on June 30, 1966, Mike Tyson grew up in Brooklyn with his mother and siblings after their father abandoned them.
Tyson was small and shy growing up in a rough neighborhood, which led to him getting bullied a lot. Instead of succumbing to the bullying, he developed his own style of street fighting.
He joined a gang called the Jolly Stompers, and when he was 11-years-old, they made him clean out cash registers while they held the store owners at gunpoint. By the age of 13, he had been arrested 30 times. His poor behavior earned him a spot inside a reform school in upstate New York.
During his time at the school, he met a counselor by the name of Bob Stewart, who was a former amateur boxing champion. Tyson begged him to teach him how to box, and finally, Stewart agreed on the condition that Tyson would work hard in school.
Tyson developed a love for boxing, and in 1980, Stewart introduced Tyson to legendary boxing manager Constantine ‘Cus’ D’Amato. He could see Tyson’s raw talent and invited him to stay with him and train, telling him, “if you listen, you could be the world heavyweight champion someday.”
Well, he stayed with D’Amato, listened, trained his butt off and made his professional boxing debut on March 6, 1985. He faced off against Hector Mercedes and knocked him out in one round. A legend was born. In 1986, Tyson had a 22-0 record, 21 of those wins coming in the form of a knockout.
In November 1986, Tyson got his first title fight for the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship. He won the title by knockout in the second round and became the youngest heavyweight champion in history.
In August 1987, he became the first heavyweight to own all three major boxing belts after he defeated Tony Tucker for the International Boxing Federation title. Tyson’s impressive winning streak eventually came to an end in 1990 when he lost his championship belt to Buster Douglas in a fight for the ages. Even though Tyson had Douglas against the ropes in the eighth round, he wasn’t able to close it out and ended up getting knocked out for the first time in his career.
In 1992, Tyson was found guilty on one count of rape and two counts of deviant sexual conduct. He spent three years in prison before being released in 1995. He returned to the boxing ring and dominated once again, knocking out one poor dude in just 89 seconds.
In 1996, Tyson faced off against Evander Holyfield. He lost by knockout in the 11th round. A rematch happened in 1997, and that’s when Tyson famously bit a portion of Holyfield’s ear off. During the peak of his career, Mike Tyson’s net worth close to $300 million, but these days? He’s worth around $3 million. He makes much less than LeBron James and Chris Brown.
