The alien predators arrived by boat. Within two years, everyone was dead. Almost.
The tiny islet of Ball’s Pyramid lies 600km east of Australia in the South Pacific, rising out of the sea like a shard of glass. And there they were – halfway up its sheer cliff edge, sheltering under a spindly bush – the last of the species. Two escaped and just nine years later there were 9,000, the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Adam and Eve.
No, this isn’t a bizarre take on the story of creation. The lucky couple were tree lobsters Dryococelus australis, stick insects the size of a human hand. They were thought to be extinct soon after black rats invaded their native Lord Howe Island in 1918, but were (click the title to read the full article)

Everything You Should Know About Sound
I’ve always been a little confused about sound. So for “Tuesday’s” “mini” post, I decided to do something about that.
We think of sound as something we hear—something that makes noise. But in pure physics terms, sound is just a vibration going through matter.
The way a vibration “goes through” matter is in the form of a sound wave. When you think of (click the title to read the full article)
Google’s AI Wins Pivotal Second Game in Match With Go Grandmaster
After more than four hours of tight play and a rapid-fire endgame, Google’s artificially intelligent Go-playing computer system has won a second contest against grandmaster Lee Sedol, taking a two-games-to-none lead in their historic best-of-five match in downtown Seoul.
The surprisingly skillful Google machine, known as AlphaGo, now needs only one more win to claim victory in the match. The Korean-born Lee Sedol will go down in defeat unless (Click the title to read the full article)

10 Cloverfield Lane is a tension-filled thriller that’s worthy of the secrecy surrounding it
10 Cloverfield Lane is the first big movie surprise of the year.
And by that, I don’t mean it’s unexpectedly good (although it is very, very good), or that it does things you wouldn’t expect, or anything like that. I mean that up until January, even the most dedicated of movie fans didn’t know it existed.
Producer J.J. Abrams so successfully hid the production of this spiritual successor to his 2008 found-footage monster movie Cloverfield (it has nothing to do with its predecessor; think of the two Cloverfield movies as an anthology film franchise akin to television’s The Twilight Zone) that when it was first announced via a trailer on January 13, moviegoers only had to (click the title to read the full article)
The New 'Captain America: Civil War' Trailer Shouldn't Have Spoiled Spider-Man
That’s a super spiffy Spider-Man costume. And man it’s definitely exciting to see a new Spidey out in the wild, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe no less.
Also, the new Captain America: Civil War trailer definitely has me intrigued. I admit, I’ve never been thrilled about the films choosing to go this route. Certainly Civil War certainly looks good from the trailers, and it has to be a big step up from Age of Ultron, but as much as I like seeing our heroes go toe-to-toe, I’m a little worried about where this is headed. I keep liking (Click the title to read the full article)
I hate that I hate answering my phone
I hate that I hate getting on the phone. I used to love it. Back when my pink Princess phone had an extra long cord so I could take it out of my parent’s hallway and into my bedroom under the covers of my bed, I would talk on the phone to my junior high girlfriends for eight hours in a night about very important things like sparkly nail polish, the existence of heaven and hell and whether or not (click on the title to read the full article)

Scientists think they’ve spotted clouds on Pluto, so they want to call it a planet again
When the magnificent image above of Pluto came out in September, it took a while for scientists to notice something peculiar about it.
It’s not easily visible to the naked eye. But then, Will Grundy of Lowell Observatory told the New Scientist, scientists noticed some “localized low-altitude features” (see arrows) and “bright cloud-like things” (see circle).
Let’s look again after adjusting (click on the title to read the full article)
