We know it’s tough to not go insane while waiting on hold. We’re all too familiar with those dreaded two words, “Please hold.” It’s a rigid wall. No matter how busy we are, we don’t have a say in the matter. It’s either you wait on hold or hang up. The worst part about it is the unknown. We never know how long we’ll be on hold, stuck in an awful telephone purgatory. It could range anywhere from 15 seconds to 15 minutes (sometimes it feels like it could be 15 years). Who’s to know? Fortunately, there is good news. Those precious seconds that fade into minutes can be used for something fun and productive. So, don’t despair, here’s how to not go insane while waiting on hold.
Sign a petition online
Research something you are passionate about and sign a petition for it online. You can make a difference with the touch of your fingertips. On March For Our Lives, you can sign the petition to help ban the sale of assault weapons, like the ones used in Las Vegas, Orlando, Sutherland Springs, Aurora and Sandy Hook.
Delete old text messages
Just like having too many apps, having too many text messages can slow down your phone. Go through your device and delete any unnecessary text message. If you are the kind of person that likes to save things, you can download them to your computer.
Call your parents
Put your hold call on hold and call your parents! Think of all the missed calls you’ve had from them over the last year. Make your Mom or Dad’s day by calling to check in and to catch up. They will definitely appreciate it.
Make a phone projector
All you’ll need is a shoe box, glue, and a magnifying glass. Position your magnifying glass at the end of the box and cut out enough space so the magnifying glass can fit perfectly. Place your phone inside the box and enjoy!
Write your future self a letter
Future Me allows you to write a letter to your future self. They will email you the letter you wrote in either 1 year, 3 years, or 5 years. They also have an option to choose a specific date. Most of the people who wrote to themselves found the experience to be very moving.
Drink a glass of wine or two
Everyone knows the old saying, “A glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away.” Or, wait, was it an apple? Either way, wine does actually contain ingredients that boosts the immune system. It also helps reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease. So why not indulge in a glass of wine while you’re waiting on hold. Just remember to drink responsibly.
Yoga isn’t just for the devoted yogi, it can be for the everyday person, too. The best part is you only need a few minutes to start reaping the rewards. Practicing the Bridge Pose, Chair Pose, and Child’s Pose are some of the easiest techniques. Yoga can help with lower back pain, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Make a candle
Gather old crayons together and put them in the microwave for around one minute. If you want a scent, add half a cube of scented wax into the mix. Once the wax is liquefied, you can pour it in a new glass container that has a wick glued to the bottom of it. In the matter of minutes, you’ll have a new candle for your home.
Cook some bangin' Ramen Noodles
Have a delicious meal ready in less than three minutes. Ramen noodles can be enhanced by adding white onion, cilantro, soy sauce, franks red hot and fresh lime juice. If you are feeling really adventurous, you could even add a fried egg.
Tell someone Happy Birthday on Facebook
It’s always someone’s birthday on Facebook. While your strolling through your news feed, take a few seconds and wish a facebook friend Happy Birthday. You never know what old relationship you could rekindle.
Prank your significant other
Some of the best pranks take only seconds to setup and the person you are doing it to normally sets it off themselves. All you have to do it sit back and watch. One of my favorite pranks is taking a rubber band and wrapping it around the trigger press on the faucet spray.
Plan a trip
Browse Google flights and see what the cheapest tickets are to get the heck out of Dodge. You might be surprised at how low some flights are. Even more so if you live close to an airport hub. For example, Atlanta, Georgia is Delta’s largest hub, so flights tend to be cheaper.
Kiss your significant other
Kissing is good for you! Scientists found that kissing releases chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin that make you feel euphoric. Put your phone on speaker and use the elevator music to set the perfect mood for you and your partner.
Tidy the inside of your car
Venture into the black hole between your armrest and your two front seats where fallen french fries go to die. It might surprise you how many missing things might reappear. Cleaning your car is a fun and productive thing to do while on hold.
Rub your grandmother's feet
Show someone you love them by rubbing their feet. Grandmothers in particular are quite found of this caring gesture. It has been proven that foot massages promote better sleep, blood circulation, and relaxation.
Sing your favorite song
It has been proven that singing relaxes your body and can even lower levels of cortisol. So, with that being said, next time you are hold, turn up your favorite tune and belt out some feel good lyrics.
According to LiveStrong.com, if you weighed 135-pounds, you could burn 108 calories by squatting for 15 minutes. Even if you only on hold for a few minutes, you will be able to burn some fat!
Name a star after you or someone you love
Imagine giving someone you love a star. There is no gift like it! Every time they look up, they would have something permanently theirs in the sky. Online Star Register is one of the many cool websites out there that let you name a star after someone.
Give your pet a photoshoot
What’s cuter then animals wearing human clothes? Nothing! So gather your furry friends and give them a photo shoot they always deserved. Get creative with it and put together cute outfits made out of old material laying around. Your social media followers will thank you.
Schedule that dentist appointment
Let’s face it, scheduling a dentist appointment isn’t on anyones favorite thing to do list. By making your appointment while you are on hold, you’ll save time for yourself in the future.
