The first state park in the United States.


On the United States side the park was the first of its kind. Walkways were built for visitors to easily access different views of the park. It provided a natural outdoor place for families to go and spend time.


Frederick Law Olmsted created the Niagara Falls State Park

Frederick Law Olmsted was the founder of American landscape architecture. He is know for his work on designing the grounds of Central Park in New York City. Frederick fought to free Niagara falls from being obscured from view. He wanted a place for people to go to see the true beauty of the falls.


The water is green.

The green color of the Niagara Falls comes from the dissolved salts of ground rock. The limestone bed, the shales and sandstones add to its unique shade of green.


The Niagara Falls is about 12,000 years old.

The Niagara Peninsula emerged from the ice about 12,500 years ago. Created from vast sheets of ice from the Ice Age. The glacial melted water began to flow down through what is now Lake Erie. While it wasn’t as big as it is today, the falls came from humble beginnings.

While the actual amount varies from the time of year and time of day, the best time to visit the falls is  from June to August. The flow over the falls is at its peak during this season.
