Have a picnic in your living room or backyard
Don’t have a good place close by for a picnic? Can’t find a babysitter? Why not pack a picnic for your backyard or living room? Don’t just head up leftovers and take them to your patio; legit pack a picnic. Sandwiches, cold salads, cheeses, fruits…lay out a blanket. It’s fun, breaks you out of the normal routine, and won’t empty your wallet.
Go window shopping
This is a great way to have some one-on-one time with your love. While you’re out, you can sip a latte and get some exercise in. Talk about life; tell funny stories; share how your week is going; laugh at the things people buy; plan what you’ll do with the lotto money; simply hold hands.
The cost? Gas money to your nearest shopping area & maybe $10 at your local coffee shop.
Pro tip: Go after lunch or dinner so your tummy is full and you won’t be stuck needing to buy food out.
Take a walk
This follows the same principle as above, just take away the shopping plaza. If you live near a nature preserve, lake, or park, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy fresh scenery. You could also just simply walk around your neighborhood.
Go on a real picnic in the park
If getting out of the house is a huge priority, kick it old school and take your picnic to a park. Still budget friendly, still romantic and fun (Just keep the glass wine bottle at home).
You may not know this, but chances are where ever you live, there’s a trail. Take advantage of this public amenity and take a hike with your special someone! It’s good physical activity somewhere in between a walk and a high-intensity sport, too, so you get quality time and a good work out.
Hit up free museums
If your city has any museums around, check them out to see if they have free admission. You might be surprised. If they don’t have free admission, you might be able to find a good coupon or qualify for a discount on certain days. It’s a good way to experience culture and love.
Go through old photos
What’s more romantic than a trip down memory lane? Looking through old photos will spark conversations about “remember that time when…” and will make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
If you haven’t been together that long, this still works. You can just share photos and tell stories about your life. It’s a great way to learn about your partner.
Do a puzzle
Put on some good music, put out some snacks, and get to work piecing together a work of art. Puzzles help with problem solving, so working together with your other half will bring a sense of team work you might not expect from an activity so simple and inexpensive.
Visit a bookstore
Sadly, bookstores are a dying breed. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy online shopping as much as the next person, but still…every now and then, it’s good to get out and sniff a book in public. Sorry, is that just me? You can’t do that on a Kindle! Seriously, next time you have a physical book in your hands, stick your nose near the pages and inhale. I’m not weird. Promise.
The only downside is that it’s really quite difficult to have self-control. Be careful with this one or you and your partner will end up with 5 more books you don’t have time to read.
See a community play
Broadway isn’t cheap; however, your local high school, community college, or hole-in-the-wall community theater might just fit your budget. There are a ton of good actors out there, and not all of them have full-time professional careers.
Endorphins. Need I saw more? Just take a shower before you transition to Netflix & chill.
And there are a million and one clever work out ideas online that require no financial investment, so no excuses.
Have a movie marathon
Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, James Bond…there are so many good movies out there to binge watch. Get some popcorn going and marathon your favorite movie sagas or maybe just pick a central theme. If you don’t want to rent or buy these movies, hit up a friend to see if you could borrow from their movie library.
Netflix & chill
Have a romantic dinner at home
You don’t have to go to a fancy restaurant to connect over delicious food. What typically sets things apart is atmosphere, so pull out the fancy dinnerware and candles, and put on some mood music. If you’re not a great cook, look up a recipe for something easy, like spaghetti or burgers.
There are so many things you could do with this one. From practical things like putting together that bookshelf you bought last month to something crafty, like building a bird house. Creating something together is a great experience.
Host a game night with friends
Date nights don’t have to be just the two of you. Invite a few other couples over, dust off those games in your closet, and ask everyone to bring something to share!
Work together to help someone else out! There are so many things you can do. You can help clean up a local lake or beach, help out at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, or lend a hand at an animal shelter. By coming together for a cause, you’ll feel good about what you’re doing and also feel good about each other.
Visit an arcade
I’m not talking about Dave & Busters or fancy trendy arcades. Save those for when you have more money in the bank. But in some cities, you might happen upon old arcades in the corner of a run down mall. Bust out your inner child and grab some quarters. The air hockey table might be a little wobbly, but you can still have a lot of fun kicking your partner’s butt.
Play a sport
If you and your other half are athletically inclined at all, don’t rule out playing a sport as a way to date. Some cities even have adult community leagues you could join to play sports like softball or dodgeball. The good thing about this is it will give you a consistent date night each week. Alternatively, you could just take the soccer ball out and kick it around, just the two of you.
Watch YouTube videos
This may sound silly, but think about how often you share videos with friends. Why not do this with your significant other? In preparation for the date, you can each choose like 5 or 10 videos you want to share beforehand. Then take turns sharing your excellent finds over some popcorn and a bottle of wine.
Food, working together, good music, maybe some wine…this is one of my personal favorite date night ideas. You could cook something elaborate for just one night, or you could make it more practical and meal prep for an entire week.
Visit a pet store
This mainly applies to people who like animals but have self control. If either one of you are suckers for a cute puppy face and won’t be able to resist, stay away. But if you like animals, have self control, and know you can’t take in another pet responsibly, it’s nice to visit all the cute fluffy animals.
Have a dreams and goals chat
Vision planning is a great way to not only get to know your partner, but also give you something to work together towards as a team. It can be a very intimate experience, and you might even learn something you didn’t know about your other half. Just be open and non-judgmental.
Have a craft night
Yes, craft supplies can be pricey, but if you’re one of those people who slowly build stuff up over time, you probably have more stuff than you realize. The glitter you used on your daughter’s birthday party invites and the googly eyes you bought in the Target $1 section because you just had to have them could be used for extreme creativity. With crafting, the possibilities are endless.
Check out Groupon or other coupon sites
You might be surprised by the types of date night deals you can get on coupon sites and apps. That $50 painting and wine class you wanted to take your other half to might be on sale for $25. Those tango lessons you’ve been eyeballing could be half off. You just never know.
