In his dialogue Timaeus and Critias, Plato describes Atlantis as a formidable naval power that conquered much of Europe and Africa circa 9000 BC. After failing to invade Athens, however, it sank into the ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune”. While there have been numerous efforts focused on locating the remains of the city, nothing tangible has ever been found.

During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island after giving her last radio transmission. Although the official version states that Earhart ran out of fuel and crashed at sea, there have been numerous speculations ranging from capture by Japanese forces to living out the rest of her days as a spy for the CIA.

A medieval document written in an unknown language, for hundreds of years its contents have remained a mystery. Although the prevailing theory is that it served as a pharmacopoeia, the puzzling illustrations have fueled many other theories about its origins and content.

Literally translated to the “The Goat Sucker”, the name is derived from the fact that it supposedly attacks animals to drink their blood…particularly goats. It is most commonly described as a lizard-like being, appearing to have leathery skin and sharp spines running down its back. Given the name it shouldn’t come as a surprise that most sightings come out of Latin America.

In 1968 an underwater rock formation was found near North Bimini Island in the Bahamas. Although it is considered by some scientists to be an example of naturally occurring tessellated pavement, the unusually symmetrical arrangement of stones has led to speculations about it being the remnant of some long lost civilization.

I want to thank all people involved in the pissing contest! I throughly enjoyed myself to tears of joy. Extremely educational and forthright in your discoveries…keep seeking the truth!! I shall visit this site again for a good laugh. Thank you all
you guys r all retards. none of them have been discovered
Bigfoot and the loch ness monster are already discoverd dumb nut
Interesting! I guess we learn something new every day. Weather it’s true or a myth, there is always a mystery behind in every thing. After all it’s a big world, with many culture. What interest me the most are the ancient buildings, like the stone henge or the palace in incas or the forbidden palace in china.
Like how did they moves those big stones up and down in those mountains in incas, or how the forbidden palace in china can stands for centuries with no metal connect them wood only. I guess we modern folks are just spoil brats compare to those ancients.
first of all atlantis was made up plato even said atlantis was made up, the tunguska explosion was a comet exploding in the high atmosphere, and the mary celeste was abandoned due to leaky casks and malfunctioning equipment (ok that needs more esplaination) the mary celeste was carrying a cargo of surgical alcohol which even if one cask started to leak it would evaporate into the air so one spark would of caused a sheet flame effect which is when a wave of flame passes through a room causing all doors and windows to blow open (mentioned in origional report) but cause little to no flame damage, its also enough to scare the crap into sailers and the one thing that is always grabbed when fleeing a sinking ship? the ships log
u act lyk u kno stuff but if u cant solve all of the mysteries why try?, and everytin u said is based off wat other ppl said
no shit, do you really think i have access to sufficient lab space to test these? and its people like you which made these mysteries stay mysteries for so long because they think these things cant be solved. you are literally saying why bother solving any mysteries? and that is a question that i shouldnt need to answer because its answer is obvious. also learn to spell.
No, he’s saying that you can’t solve mysteries with speculations, like you do. It’s people like you who thinks they know everything who recede questions like these.
And don’t judge one’s spelling, or correcting him to boost your ego (okay, miss Smith?), he’s clearly not born English.
You* like* you* know* you* can’t* everything* you* what* people*. Learn to spell before you criticize other people, okay?
Your talking crap thiers is no solid information that says the Tunguska incident was a comet, stop talking crap!
oh i cant confirm that it was a comet but the various recreations of the disaster (using shaped terrain, matchsticks and a variety of differant effects) have shown that since there was little to no debris found. and the way the trees(matchsticks) blew over that it would have to of been a large object traveling at terminal velocity that had an airborne detonation. (the only other possible explaination is that an alien spacecraft was flying low and fast and it happened to activate its self destruct feature before impact and the russians carted away what was left)
The city of Atlantis was found in March of 2011 on the coast of Spain. Look up the national Geographic special called Finding Atlantis. And no Plato didn’t make it up. He documented the exact journey it took to get there, a very detailed map of the city complete with measurements, and a record of trade with the people of Atlantis.
Someone recreated ball lightning in their garage using just the right combination of water, salt, and a ton of electricity I think. I saw it in an article of Mental Floss about “garage scientists” who do amazing work outside of labs. That’s a terrible explanation, just look it up. Also, the Paulding Lights in Michigan seem pretty amazing to me, but then I don’t know much about them. If anyone has a good explanation, I’d love to hear it.
The majority of these aren’t mysteries. They’re just mysteries to folks with an IQ below 85 with tinfoil hats. There was no Atlantis, the Bermuda Triangle is no more remarkable than any other area of water, there is no Lock Ness Moster, the Bimini Wall is a natural formation, et cetera.
if anyone has any questions about the univers…ask this jack-@ss. He obviously knows all there is to know about everything…
you sir, are hilarious.
(Slow claps) Wow, well I’m glad you are so intelligent as to clear all of that up for us. You must be a scholar. Thanks for all of the discrediting evidence you presented to discount all of that. Oh wait…you merely just said it wasn’t true. Before you remark on someone’s IQ, take a look in the mirror and slap yourself.
I don’t think it’s such a big surprise Amelia Earhart was never found, because the search efforts only lasted 9 days. Also, when I was about 4 or 5 maybe, I saw ball lightning right outside my window. Luckily, all it did was go on past us. There have been reports of it literally going inside people’s chimneys into their homes, just lazily zig-zagging along randomly. I don’t see why you didn’t include that. If you don’t believe me, look it up:)
This is a nice list for the most part, but I have a few things I feel I should point out…
16. Every documented case of someone discovering a Sasquatch has turned out to be a hoax, I think at a certain point it stops being a mystery and starts just being something rednecks do for fun.
15. Atlantis was never intended to be taken as a literal city, it was just a hypothetical city Plato created to give philosophers something to talk about.
14. A set of bones from a body of Amelia Earhart’s proportions with equipment she was known to be carrying with her at the time of her disappearance was found on an island just to the southeast of where Earhart was headed just 4 years after she vanished.
2. Based on the fact that 9 of the Mary Celeste’s cargo barrels of raw alcohol were empty, the primary theory is that there was a pressure wave-type explosion which left everything on board the ship unharmed and unmarked, but likely terrified the crew so badly that they immediately abandoned ship.
1. Even the original Nessie image was proven to be a picture of a log taken in bad lighting, I’d say there’s no more mystery to the Loch Ness Monster than there is to Sasquatch.
Share and Enjoy.
I’ve learn several good stuff here. Definitely value bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how a lot attempt you set to create this sort of magnificent informative website.
The sailing stones are due to the following circumstances.
The stones are in a dry riverbed or lake bed which gets filled with shallow water in the winter.
This water freezes around the stones.
When the ice thaws, the stones are locked in chunks of ice.
The chunks of ice move around, leaving channels where the stones drag against the bottom.
Then the ice melts and dries leaving the stones with the mysterious tracks.
1 and 2 are discredited now. The Mary Celeste had a sister-ship that murdered everyone on board and sailed off, and in 2003, the BBC sponsored a full search of the Loch using 600 separate sonar beams and satellite tracking. The search had enough resolution to pick up a small buoy. No animal of any substantial size was found whatsoever and despite high hopes, the scientists involved in the expedition admitted that this essentially proved the Loch Ness monster was only a myth.
Really curious where you got this Mary Celeste sister ship murder idea? The ship was found with all of its doors open. It was carrying alcohol. One small leak and the fumes will build in the hull until an ignition source. Once ignited, being alcohol, it will burn quickly and clearly creating a pressure differential that would burst every door open. Now tell me, if you are on a boat in the middle of the ocean back in those days, and all the doors on you’re boat suddenly flew open without reason? would you stay on the damn boat? I would be off of it in a heartbeat, even if it means I’m swimming.
A good theory for Bimini road is expounded in the excellent book 1421 – The Year China Discovered The World. He proposes that a Chinese armada (the subject of the book) pitches up at North Bimini with one of their number carrying damage to the hull which needed repairing. The theory goes that with the sea level at the time, the road they made would have been shallower, and served as a slipway from where they could mend the hull and relaunch her.
Later in the book he continues to trace the voyages of the 3 (i think) strands of the armada as they make their way around the globe, one of which travelled down the western seaboard of the Americas, trading with the indiginous populations as they went. He speculates – not unreasonably in my opinion – that their appearance (short, until-then-unseen facial structure, wearing white gowns) and way-ahead-of-everyone-else technology gave rise to the ‘grey’ alien myth which is strongly linked to central america and the Mayans, among others, with whom they would assumedly have traded. This is supported by the presence of asian mRNA and traditional chinese pottery making skills in pockets of central america which have no business being there. Look again at Chucaprabas – short, big head, odd eyes. Could this just be a central american tribe’s story of the time they met a chinese expedition, multiplied by 500 years of exaggeration to add wings and hooves and spines etc etc…?
Brilliant
DB cooper was found in 2009/2010
The “sailing stones” are moved due to the beautiful powers of the wind
Number 24, the sailing stones. I don’t understand the mystery on this nor why I have yet to see anyone try and answer it simply. It wouldn’t take much more than a thunderstorm to produce enough moisture to soften the soil while reducing friction when coupled with swirling winds blowing on an odd, randomly formed surface of the rock may result in an odd randomly carved path. I’m also guessing these storms occur more than once in time-span between visits by would be mystery solvers which would further the length and randomness of these paths…I didn’t research the climate of this region so I could be desperately wrong but I’m a fan of keeping it simple, stupid.
HAS ANYONE ELSE NOTICED A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE BETWEEN BD COOPERS ARTIST IMPRESSION AND THE ZODIAC KILLERS? I GUESS PEOPLE ALL LOOK ALIKE TO SKETCH ARTISTS..
I remember reading about a river somewhere (i know… very vague) where balls of light appear from the water and float away into the air. It happens every year and is very well documented but is still a mystery.
what about the lady who had the cell phone in a movie when cell phones didnt exist?
It was not a cellphone, it was a hearing aid. A cellphone wouldn’t have even worked back then because there were no cell phone towers.
FYI, G. blacki existed 1 million – 300,000 years ago. Dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago.
Thanks for pointing that out, many say even more recently than that ~100,000 years ago or less. Russel Ciochon was my physical anthropology professor and is considered the worlds foremost expert.
thats pretty badass
The ball lightning is made when the thunder and lightning effects the atmosphere and static electricity forms into a ball for it is a different type of electricity from the lightning that would be close by and is also a smaller quantity. They’re quite rare though.
Ball lightening can be re-created by filling a bucket with a plasma-like mixture of salt and water. This increases conductivity. Run two wires from a capacitor; one end at the bottom of the bucket, the other end slightly submerged at the top. Crank the voltage to 4,000 and you will see a colored, glowing orb rise from the mixture for a short time. Color of the orb is dictated by the type of salt used.
As for the ‘Bigfoot’ sighting/film. A few years ago, it was revealed that the camera-guy who allegedly took the footage finally confessed to the hoax on his deathbed:
It was him in the home-made gorilla-type suit.
Dude,
Stop ruining my childhood
the “WOW” signal was realized later to be a frequency detected from a manmade satellite that was in orbit.
Some of these have been debunked as hoaxes and were obviously false from the get go, some are just common sense once the facts have been found, some have a valid scientific theory backed by observable evidence that is not guaranteed to be true but which the alternate hypothesis is no more likely than “magical faeries,” and a few are genuine and awesome mysteries I know very smart people are working on and that I hope won’t be that way for long
Some people here almost go out of their way to deliberately defend any damn thing even if it is absolutely silly, some are persuadable when evidence is given to them, some are absolutely skeptical and dismissive of the idea that any of these are mysteries, and a few have enough common sense to debunk some of these right off the bat and enough of an open mind to look at the evidence for the others.
In short, the internet and people in general are absolute shit – but there are exceptions: and I applaud them for awesomeness
wow. Now I, too, know everything. Thanks for the education!
Do not confuse your own speculations as facts.
Dear Death,
To whom are you saying not to confuse speculation with facts. If you are responding to my previous post regarding the Tunguska event I must respectfully reject your comment. I think that I have quite clearly explained that this is not my own speculation but the result of years of research conducted. I have no speculation, only facts which I have collected on my own. I could care less what actually caused the event. I am simply pointing out the flaw with calling it a “mystery.” It may have been a mystery when it occurred, but most of the contemporary physicists today consider the explosion of a meteor moments before impact to be an accurate depiction of events, especially after the simulation was conducted. Although the exact event was never recorded with instruments of research, post-event research combined with eye witness accounts and general facts about thermodynamics has left us with an extremely viable explanation of events which although rare, makes perfect sense in terms of the resulting phenomenon. Much like how we could never send a probe to go digging around inside the sun to say for certain what is going on in the core; but we have collected general knowledge of gravity (thanks to Newton and Einstein), thermodynamics, radiation, and Nuclear fusion; to depict a satisfactory explanation as to what keeps the sun producing its energy and bathing the earth with warmth and light. These are not mere speculations, but viable explanations for events which cannot be observed directly. If you were not responding to me, disregard this and I apologize for the lengthy defense.
Actually, it’s all their theory. Do you know what a theory is? If you did, you probably would have shut up a long time ago, because that’s what you are arguing. You heard someone’s theory, and now you are basically stating it as a fact and saying case closed. It is indeed still a mystery, and if you think not, you are ignorant. Now that is a fact.
we have to be completly selfish to think we are the only inteligent species out there. big foot doesnt want to be found obviously they are smart enough to cover up there tracks. and we are dumb enouph to not think they are inteligent. they do exist i have seen one with my own 2 eyes.
I didn’t read all of the comments on here so someone may have pointed this out already…#18 “Tunguska explosion” is not a mystery at all. In fact, it is generally accepted that the unique pattern and flattening of the trees with no visible crater, was caused by a meteor which became superheated upon entering the atmosphere and exploded due to internal pressure before it ever impacted the ground. The explosive force was phenomenal and was heard for hundreds of miles in all directions. Researchers believe the meteor had a particularly large amount of trapped ice. when the gas and ice rich rocks began to heat up to temperatures greater than or equal to the temperatures of the upper-mantle, the object became highly explosive. most meteors do not contain much ice and if it were a comet (which is almost all ice) the ice would vaporize and escape into the atmosphere little by little upon entry, instead of all at once; but because it was trapped inside the rock of the meteor, when the pressure and temperature reached a critical level, the rock could no longer contain the gaseous pressure of the vaporized ice. The meteor was probably not much bigger than a small car when it detonated and was most likely entirely vaporized. The surrounding trees were flattened in a butterfly pattern indicating the lateral direction which the meteor was traveling when it detonated. This was all mere speculation until researchers conducted a simulation in which they detonated an object in this same manner (moving down towards and laterally to the surface). The object in the lab was detonated above a “forest” of small wooden sticks (toothpicks). The explosion in the lab resulted in nearly identical flattening of the trees as in Tunguska.
That’s a theory. Not a fact. Therefore it is still a mystery, and unless you were there when it happened, it probably always will be.
Sorry, my phone messed up on that last comment, but I do a lot of research, and have numerous college credits, just for the fun of learning, and scientists have indeed analyzed the infamous Bigfoot video, and concluded that no human could walk like that, also used special imaging software that detects seams on clothing and costumes, and have concluded also, that it was not a costumed person, or an elaborate hoax, but indeed an unknown species, and it has been officially reported that he does exist. Also with the Chupacabra, a farmer and avid hunter, had several of his goats pop up dead by morning. So, he waited during the night, for several nights with traps set and his rifle in hand. He finally got lucky, and was able to shoot and kill an animal attacking one of his goats. Upon sunrise, and the fact he had never seen something like that before, he called the police and zoologists, and other specialists arrived at his farm too. It was an unknown species, it had razor sharp demonic looking teeth, stood upright on his 2 hind legs, and looked like a mix of a fox and an iguana, and had porcupine-like quills on its back. It was never identified as any species we’ve yet discovered. So, that is interesting to me. They bite the goats on the neck in the arterial area, thus draining and drinking the blood. They have only found a handful, but these are believed to be the infamous “goat sucker”, lol. Anyways, hope this is interesting to you all!
. research, and be careful of what you believe and be wary of what you read. Use logic! And I’m not even getting into others on the list, and what else should be on the list, because then its just my opinion, and not fact. Lol.
#18 proven to be an air burst meteorite, after exploding above the forest there was little left as it disintegrated, but the shock wave took down many trees.
Atlantis: now commonly thought to have been one of those cities built near the sea below sea level that the ground suddenly burst with fountains after and earthquake and then a tidal wave that bounced back off the other side of the ocean came and filled it the rest of the way with water. i forgot what these pools were called though.
Actually, about 1/2 of these are explained, so it’s a mess of a list.
Vile Vortices has been shown to be largely nonsense (a number of disappearances are actually known and mundane, other disappearances don’t even occur in the claimed areas).
Spontaneous Combustion is known to occur only in tight living locations where fire behavior, although odd, is actually understood.
Tunguska Explosion is thought by all serious scientists that it was a meteor…they only argue about the composition and size of it.
Bermuda Triangle is one of the Vile Vortices (so this is just a repeat) with the same nonsense (mundane disappearances, changed locations to fit the triangle, etc).
Bigfoot, Atlantis, Chupcabra and Loch Ness monster are both nothing more than wishful thinking. The tooth fairy and santa claus have more going for them.
The primary theory about the Voynich Manuscript is that it is a hoax.
Bimini Road is well understood to be a natural formation. Just because a few wackos claim otherwise doesn’t mean there is a mystery here.
I’m not aware of anyone that takes Mothman seriously.
Marfa lights are atmospheric reflections of automobile headlights and campfires.
“Ships would depart from an area in the Bermuda triangle with a given name and change that name during the trip, this would facilitate smuggling drugs, however on record this showed that many ships did not reach their destination. These were then claimed to be lost at sea and precisely in the bermuda triangle.”
I’m sure that’s exactly what happen to the military rescue plane that disappeared… and the rescue planes that went after the rescue plane…
Large burst of light than air gases have been recorded in the Bermuda triangle, these could swallow entire ships in an instant and when the gas goes up in the air it causes altimeters to read as suddenly rising high into to air so the pilot dives and crashes into the ocean.
Canada doesn’t have Presidents…
No, it doesn’t. :T and Mary had a little lamb, these are things we know but I applaude your randomness.
I take back my previous comment, I hadn’t yet seen the one below me.
How about the giant hole found in Canada which several presidents have commisioned digs on, believing, that something was buried here? Upon digging they only discover more dirt, water, and large planks of wood layer upon layer upon layer? This in my opinion is indeed one of the most interesting, complex mysteries.
thats the money pit on oak island
There’s another mystery which never seizes to amaze me. Why are the mysterious of only the united states considered as the mysteries of the world? I can hardly see the world in 25
Q: “Why are the mysterious of only the united states considered as the mysteries of the world?”
A: For the same reason that the World Series doesn’t include teams from other countries.
(Hint: It could mean that a hidden seam of Isolationism still exists in the American psyche. Or maybe Americans can’t relate to anything that doesn’t involve Americans. Sad, really.)
That’s a very interesting way to look at it. With all the globalization and new technologies making the world smaller, it’s pretty surprising that our country might still subconsciously be set in its old ways. I was rather upset to see old American cold cases beat out things like the Stone Henge or even the Yeti. Maybe it’s just my opinion that the natural mysteries and legends are more mysterious than unsolved murders.
That sports analogy is ABSURD. lol
The ripper is from the UK. Nessy is from Ireland. Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato, a philosipher from Greece. Tunguska was in Russia. I’m fairly sure these aren’t the only examples up there. Perhaps you should research a little more before criticising. Another just as affective option is to actually read what they say about the supposed mysteries.
Probably because this was written by ONE person. There was no vote, this is just someone’s opinion. Calm down, and stop trying to spread your negativity.
Did anyone else cringe at the statement that Gigantopithecus is a relic from the “time of the dinosaurs”? Even if, by that statement, you meant that Nessie is a relic from the Mesozoic and Bigfoot is of an earlier time as well, you surely could have worded it much better than you did. “Dinosaur Time” is not a unit of measurement for everything pre-Holocene. :p
Ships would depart from an area in the Bermuda triangle with a given name and change that name during the trip, this would facilitate smuggling drugs, however on record this showed that many ships did not reach their destination. These were then claimed to be lost at sea and precisely in the bermuda triangle.
The most puzzling question is: Why has there not been a movie about Frank Zappa?????
What? there hasn’t been a movie about Frank Zappa? Well, that doesn’t make sense!
Bigfoot isn’t a mystery. There’s no reason to believe that bigfoot exists. The only thing historical about bigfoot are the large amounts of hoaxes and the gullible backwoods folks that fall for them.
What happened to the Money Pit on Oak Island, that didn’t make the list? Hmmm not cool.
I think all of you are not as smart as you think you are on a universal scale. All of your speculations on any one of these mysteries are second hand at best and therefore meaningless. Many of them come from reading what someone else has written about something that they read, not from any experience. The fact that the Voynich Manuscript is a document written in an unknown language is very intriguing. It could be written in some sort of code but it appears, at least from the page shown, to be some sort of journal documenting plants. Why would such a journal need to be written in code? As far as what Gibbons speculates about Atlantis goes, I think that he is truly thinking outside the box and that his guess is as good as any of those guesses belonging to the naysayers that quickly pounced on him for simply stating thoughts. I couldn’t help but notice they also attacked him for misspelling the word potato. One does not need to be a perfect speller to convey an idea. If you did not witness something with your own two eyes or your own two ears or any other senses required to experience whatever is happening you can never truly know what happened. Didn’t any of you play telephone?
obviously the biggest mystery is why is there never that perfect hotdog to bun ratio?
Lol its true, for one being made for the other you would think someone could get the sizing down.
Aliens…
I’ve also always wondered what’s at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, and what we’d find if we drained the ocean (hypothetically here, folks). It’d be amazing to see…
And I absolutely believe Nessie exists. Anyone know the research regarding the loch? Could there be an underground river or waterway or something where a possible pod of plesiosaurs could get in and out of the lake? Possibly following food in and out, one going astray every now and then? Fun to think about when people aren’t try to ram their “facts” down your throat…
I believe that the discovery channel or national geographic did a special show on what the ocean would look like if it was drained also you should look up the Trieste, it describes what’s at the bottom.
I have an explanation for all of them as Miguel said its Chuck Norris. : )
They actually did a story on Amelia Earhart a while back where they found some bones on an island and they found like fish bones and clam shells or whatever and they believe that she had survived and lived on the island for awhile because there were tools around the body that matched things that she had taken with her. It wasn’t ever a solved done deal, but it was a theory.
Most importantly… Where’s Waldo?
with carmen
Roanoke was not a lost settlement. It’s inhabitants joined the native american tribes that populated the area. That’s why the native tribes there had blonde hair and blue eyes. Really read a history book.
I know you SAY read a history book, but I learned about that crap on Roanoke in the 4th grade and I swear my teacher told me it was a mystery and they all just disappeared.
So it’s gotta be true.
But your explanation sounds cool…off to Wikipedia I go! *whistles a tune*…
I think you’re pretty great after that.
……And….what proof is there of this exactly? Because you say it? Or because someone you dont know told you this, and you believed it merely because they said it?
#18:Has anyone thought about this being a result of ball lightning?
From what I’ve heard about ball lighting, I doubt it. It isn’t as dangerous as reagular lighting and it would have to be pretty huge to cause that explosion. I personally think the high latitude meteor is the most plausible theory but I am not an expert on either subject. I suppose it could have been ball lighting, I don’t think it is likely we could ever prove what really caused it beyond a doubt.
i stoped reading right after the first one. after White returned to discover his colony has vanished, he found a single word carved in a tree, “Croatoan”, how do you not include that?
The reason we have never found Atlantis is because it’s not real. Plato’s accounts of this story were meant to be fiction. Mystery solved.
All this ridiculous belief stems from religion removing ability the stupid masses have to reason.
I agree with your assessment of religion, however, often the ones governing the masses purposefully cover things up. The smartest of the morons can see the flaws of the official story and seek the truth, leaving their imaginations and the imaginations of others to run wild.
Crazy explanations do not indicate lack of base truth that the official story is a lie.
Spontaneous combustion is impossible and does not happen, our bodies do not contain enough energy for that to happen. The only way we could spontaneously combust is if all of our energy molecules were in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). However, when we eat food, the sugars we consume are converted into ATP through three processes; glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Each of the three steps involve even smaller steps, and all of these steps together allow the sugars to be converted into ATP safely. The sugars that are not converted into ATP are stored as fat, which is more stable than ATP. There have been no real reports of spontaneous combustion.
How about the Dyatlov Pass incident?
Guess we’ll have to wait for Renny Harlin’s flick to come to fruition to give us the “truth” behind that one…
maybe Atlantis was a ship or a fleet of ships. Exaggerated in power as to become known as an island. =S
THAT is a very good theory. From my understanding the Greeks and Romans over emphesized things like that fairly often. Atlantis all together could be a metaphor or fiction. If the city WAS real and sank beneath the sea though it is more than likely no where near the original site and has possibly even been dragged beneath the Earths crust by now (Sea-floor spreading). The truth is, we will probably never know for sure. It is fun to theorize though.
Atlantis… When Plato says they were a strong naval power, this does not mean exclusively ships of the sea. Space vessels are also called “Ships” and a fleet of space ships still constitutes a navy.
How would a city state with a strong navy but no army to speak of, conquer the entire inland of the continent of Africa??? Europe… mayyyyyyyybe.
It is far more plausible that Atlantis was a large mother ship
A U.S. aircraft carrier is small in comparison to the description of Atlantis, however we call them floating cities. They have crews of thousands and enough armaments on-board at all times to destroy the world multiple times over. And we have had them since before the advent of modern computers!
A humanoid species journeyed from a dying planet orbiting Alpha Centauri or Sirius. They had a fleet of sky boats that could conquer primitive people effortlessly and unencumbered by terrain. The historians of the time lacked the vocabulary to adequately describe the nature of the vessels.
As far as Plato contradicting himself about the actual existence of Atlantis, this is a miss translation/understanding. He was saying it was not a city of any fixed location or foundations, but instead more like a District 9 situation.
They were obviously at war with the world having conquered Africa, South America, and Europe. and there is one thing history teaches us time and time again…. Is that the underdog fighting dirty and hitting in just the right spot, will always prevail over the larger, arrogant and seemingly invincible enemy.
Some rebel fighter found their way aboard Atlantis and sabotaged it’s propulsion system causing explosions that would be felt as an earthquake all over the world. Simply leaving the pieces to fall into the sea.
Other supporting info… The first blue eyes in man was almost 10,000 years ago in northern Europe(cross breading experiments to help the Atlantians adapt to their new home).
the Mayans were enslaved to their “Gods” until 9,000 years ago. their oral history caused them to mistake Cortes, A pale tall man dressed in metal arriving on seemingly giant and advanced ship for the stories passed down about the “Gods”
And to tribal people, anyone with any technology would surely be considered a Wizard or a God!
Whoa, just whoa. Making up a few ‘facts’ there now I think. Plato’s original text has been translated many many times and going by what you seem to believe I am going to assume it was done by people much smarter than you
As a matter of fact sir, my I.Q. Is 153. I have the test results administered by Yale University to prove it.
Don’t mistake your own close mindedness for other peoples stupidity. I may not be exactly correct, but that is not for a lesser human like you to determine.
Maybe you should go back to school and finish baking your potatoe
^^ Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D over here.
You spelled ‘potato’ wrong.
Well spotted Robertoe
Actually he didn’t misspell potatoe, it all depends on whether he was typing in Birtish English or American English, which is a diluted form of proper English, based more on phonetics to make English more palatable for an immigrant nation, much the same way why American streets are commonly numbered.
Potatoe is the correct spelling in Britain. Technically, it should be spelled potatoes in both America and Britain as you add an ES after a vowel ending noun when you pluralise.
Finally, when we bear down on the origin of the noun potatoe and it’s naming, it was spelt as potatoe when it first came to British shores.
So before trying to appear high and mighty, by correcting others, you should check that you are correct in the first place, which you are not my dear fool.
Well my IQ is 343 and I have the test results administered by MIT to prove it.
I can also jump rope with one hand and poop tacos.
hahaha nice ^
so that’s what they do at yale. test your iq.
you should right that shenanigans into a movie script
actually plato maintains atlantis is in fact a theoretical utopia. never actually exhisted
In regards to number 4, the Mythbusters didn’t do any digging in Giants Stadium. They used ground-penetrating radar to scan the areas Hoffa was rumored to be buried.
Oh please. Everyone knows that Earhart was abducted by the Briori and brought to a planet in the Delta Quadrant. Duh.
hahahahahahaha! so true!
So why are you using a picture of a cop pepper-spraying a college student for Jack the Ripper?
He isn’t pepper spraying her. He is shining his flashlight on a woman whose chest was ripped open exposing her ribs. And who said she was in college?
25 Biggest Mysteries of Western History might have been for suitable for this list. I noticed there weren’t many from Arabic or Asian cultures….
You missed the biggest mystery of all. Where is all the wealth that was suppose to
trickle down to the middle class from Reagan’s trickle down economic theory.
Where do you think Clinton’s boom economy came from?
From Clinton. It was Bush Sr’s recession that came from Reagan’s economy.
And the other guy’s confused. It was Bush’s “no strings attached” bailout where we have no idea where the money went; with the exception of the CEO’s huge bonuses.
The Democrats stole it and bought votes with it.
we also steal millions of dollars from corporations that support the majority of the elderly population in the united states. also we tend to take wheelchairs from crippled people so that we can melt them down, inhale the fumes to achieve euphoria, and then sell them to many communist nations that will use them in their atomic explosives factories. for small profits of course. Just ask your local democrat. they may be hesitant to admit it at 1st, but if you insist that his party will be the downfall of the world, he will gladly tell you
Better yet, where did all the money go that Obama gave all the banks?
It was Bush that gave money to the banks. That happened before Obama was in office. Nice try, though.
Loch Ness Monster is an otters tail. Good thinking these are mysteries. Disappointed.
Actually, it’s a toy submarine. Doesn’t explain the multiple other sightings or the sonar pictures. I’ve seen them, there’s one that’s particularly hard to discount. It clearly shows a large finned leg (maybe you’d call it a flipper?), similiar to what a sea turtle or seal would have. It’s clear enough that it couldn’t be anything BUT a flipper. The problem is, to my knowledge no animal with such a limb lives in the Loch area.
My guess? Nessie is a huge eel.
The entry for spontaneous combustion is ridiculous. People are about 57 percent water by mass. Do you have any idea how hot something that is 57% water by mass has to be in order to burn? People do not spontaneously combust. Also, the explanation given about blood alcohol is ridiculous. There isn’t nearly enough alcohol in person’s blood, even if they die from alcohol poisoning, to burn them to a crisp. them.
I agree, it sounds like it should be impossible, but it isn’t. There have been many documented cases of spontaneous human combustion..the one shown in picture had several bizarre properties as well. The body was completely incinerated, but anything outside a small radius was untouched. As you can see, one leg was left behind. How the hell did this happen?
Also, there have been cases of people who survived, some with severe burns.
True, the human body is 70% water, and it’s hard as hell to burn (a cremation takes about five hours at 3000F). But, it also contains one hell of a lot of chemicals, not to mention flammable substances such as fat. I don’t think it’s hard to imagine some kind of freak chemical reaction happening.
The sailing stones are cause by ice collecting on the bottom of the rocks and the wind.
That would explain why the rocks seem to randomly change direction, but winds strong enough to push a 700lb stone? I think it might be more likely that the rocks are sliding “downhill”, down slight contours in the ground surface.
If the conditions are right, it doesn’t matter how heavy the stone is. If the coefficient of friction is low enough (thanks to the ice), you could blow a 7,000 lb stone around.
Just read the wiki to get a better idea of how these stones move. Also, important to note that we still don’t know why they move, but research is underway. Don’t listen to ding dongs claiming they know why they move.
Well said! I live in a small town in southern Illinois, and there are alot of times that the wind is so strong that it will get under the rug we have on the patio and push the heavy, metal, umbrella table across the patio…inch by inch.
The killer of the Black Dahlia was actually identified a few years ago. The man’s son actually came forward after his father’s death. The mans’ father was a surgeon at the time in Hollywood and supposedly left some writings and things behind for his son after his death…don’t recall the name but History channel did a special on it…
Sailing Stones –> Chuck Norris
I’d just like to point out, most of these are pretty much solved.
-The Roanoke colonists almost definitely left the starving colony to attempt to negotiate with the Natives, explaining the blue eyed Native Americans in the area
-The Tunguska Explosion matches pretty well what would happen if a rogue comet hit the earth
-Reports of the Bermuda Triangles disappearance rates, and indeed all of the vertices, have been grossly exaggerated and records of the area prove it
-A female body washed up not far from where contact was lost with Amelia Earhart matching her size and description pretty well, it was mostly bones but still
-Plato states explicitly that Atlantis didn’t exist in the same writings that he describes it
-The Mary Celeste was transporting large amounts of alcohol of the type who’s vapors can be ignited and create a pressure explosion which would have been very loud and forceful but left no burns or anything
-The Lady in the photos was probably just a lady… just saying, not like her face was seen
-A lot of those are just serial killers or murders, which happen a lot and don’t always get solved. There are literally thousands of unsolved murders. Jack The Ripper though is commonly agreed to have been a man that escaped to the states, and was caught after committing a few murders there, his name escapes me, also someone was arrested for the Zodiac murders, and they stopped mysteriously after wards…. weird huh?
-I’m not even going to start in on those cryptids mentioned but I’m sure you know what I’m thinking
-So this would be a pretty cool list, if you changed it to “7 biggest mysteries”
The only one I’ll disagree with you on is Jack the Ripper. The escapee in question, who was hanged and confessed as his rope tightened around his neck, was shown to have been (if I recall) incarcerated at the time of the Ripper murders.
I love Cracked, as well.
YES
Well, there was also as I recall a medical student who was a prime suspect..the murders stopped after he committed suicide.
I should mention that none of these have been “solved”…sure, we may have some good theories as to what happened, but we’ll never really know for sure. Not that your explanations aren’t perfectly valid, I agree with most of them.
Well, except “body” of Amelia Earheart. I think it’s unlikely that a body that was “mostly bones” would have washed up anywhere, more likely it would sink to the bottom. I think it’s far more likely she strayed into Japanese airspace, and either shot down, or forced to land and then executed.
I agree.
About the babushka lady though, they are not saying that she was in any way implicated to the murder or anything but when the assassination happened they completely closed the area and interrogated everybody and when correlating with the Zapruder film just three people where unidentified the babushka lady, the umbrella man and another man around the area in the grassy knoll. So that’s the mystery.
And about the black Dahlia it is pretty certain that the killer was a doctor by the name of George Hodel.
yup, and the sailing stones are proved to be caused by infrequent rain storms which only moisten the top layers of the baked soil. When this is combined with continual 80mph winds, the rocks move. The changing directions? well…the wind does that! =)
people who think they know everything like yourself are quite entertaining. Your answers to these mysteries are as vague as the mysteries themselves.
Their explanations are for more detailed than the “mysteries.”
Bahaha… The man who took that photo of “Nessie” (the bullshit fish) actually came forward and confessed that he simply attached a piece of ‘plastic wood’ (it’s like clay) molded into the form of its head – to a toy submarine…
I mean… don’t those waves look a tad huge to be in the Loch Ness, of a monster?! Sheesh…
Its weird how obvious the waves are once you point it out… How did so many people believe this?
because hundreds of other sightings and photos of “Nessie” and even videos have been taken
p.s.seriously did you even bother to read the part under the photo?
I did; the atrocious understanding of Scottish vernacular was painful.
