In a city basically built out of islands it would make sense that the airport would be on an island too. Hong Kong International Airport operates one of the world’s busiest passenger terminals with over 53 million people passing through every year.
Serving 56 million passengers annually Frankfurt Airport has flights to over 275 destinations in 111 countries. It is the third busiest airport in Europe behind Paris and London.
Although it is the 8th busiest airport on Earth in terms of passengers moved it is the fourth busiest in terms of aircraft takeoffs and landings.
Also known as Roissy Airport this is France’s principal aviation center and served about 61 million passengers last year.
Serving the second most populated metropolitan region in the United States, LAX serves about 61 million passengers every year.
Better known as Tokyo International Airport it was recognized by Forbes as the most punctual airport in the world which is a good thing considering that over 62 million passengers pass through its gates every year.
Also known as Chicago Airport, it’s a hub for United Airlines and American Airlines both of which contribute significantly to the total of 66 million passengers moved annually.
Located in West London London Heathrow Airport serves more international passengers than any other airport in the world with a total count of around 70 million annually.
As the main airport serving the capital of China it is run and controlled by the state and for several years now it has been by far the busiest airport in Asia serving about 77 million passengers annually.

Ever since the year 2000 Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta has been the busiest in the world serving roughly 92 million passengers annually. It is the hub of several major airlines including Southwest and has 199 gates in total.

I don’t see Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport here. It has 37 million passengers pass through it in 2011, and 41 million in 2012, making it around 22nd.
Umm…. southwest has had no presence at ATL until they acquired AirTran. Also, Southwest has no “hubs”.
